ACLASTA

Aclasta is a prescription medication used in the treatment of Osteoporosis, Paget’s disease. Aclasta is also used for preventing some cancer spreading to bone.

The active ingredient in Aclasta is Zolendronate and it is given by an infusion over 15 – 30 minutes and can be given every 1 – 2 years or as needed.

The medicine is only available with a script from your bone specialist.

Do not have this treatment if you are Pregnant, have allergies to zoledronic acid or other bisphosphonate medicine or breast feeding. Please check with your specialist first if you have a Calcium deficiency or a Vitamin D deficiency or have any thyroid condition.

Before you have an IV ACLASTA Infusion the Patient will need to

  • Have a Consultation with their Specialist and make sure this treatment is appropriate for you.

  • Obtain a referral for the treatment from your Specialist (Please ask your Specialist to email us the referral or you will need to bring a copy on the day of your treatment).

  • Obtain a prescription for an intravenous aclasta from your Specialist and bring the medication with you on the day of treatment.

  • Schedule the IV Aclasta Infusion with us.

On the Day of the IV ACLASTA Infusion, the Patient should

  • Have their breakfast/lunch as normal. Please avoid tea, coffee or other caffeine products if you can.

  • Drink plenty of fluids (at least 2 glasses)

  • Take their regular medications as normal if advised so by your specialist.

  • Take 2 Panadol before you leave for your appointment.

  • Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the IV Aclasta Infusion.

After the treatment we ask the patient wait at the Clinic for a further 30 minutes to ensure that there are no major side effects.

After the treatment the Patient will be able to drive home and/or continue with their normal daily activities.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS INCLUDE but not limited to:

  • For 1st time users you may possibly have flu like feelings for 1-3 days (possibly longer in rare cases).

  • Patients with pre-existing kidney conditions can sometimes experience deterioration in their kidney function so it is important that your Specialist approves for you to have this treatment.

  • Eye inflammation in very rare cases.
